Abstract
Unconventional medical therapy, which includes not only alternative but also complementary medical techniques, has infiltreated mainstream medical practices in recent years. Alternative medicine is any unconventional system that is used in place of a conventional medical treatment Complementary medicine is any unconventional method that is used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment. The goal of these therapies is not to cure disease but rather to control symptoms and improve well-being. This article, which is written by J.M. Metz (Medical and Pediatric Oncology, 34, 20-26, 2000), is a general introduction to the topic of alternative medicine and will cover some of the more common methods. The goal is to provide background information and thereby improve physician-patient interactions whenever unconventional medical practices and discussed.
